Red Wings Re-Sign Seider to Seven-Year, $59.85M Contract - Seasports

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Moritz Seider to a seven-year contract with an average annual value of $8.55 million, the team announced on Thursday.

With this signing, the Red Wings have successfully secured all their restricted free agents, having previously inked forward Lucas Raymond to an eight-year deal valued at $8.075 million per year.

Seider’s new contract makes him the second-highest paid player on the team, just behind captain Dylan Larkin, who earns $8.7 million annually.

The deal has consumed nearly all of the Red Wings’ remaining salary cap space, leaving the team with $198,194 while maintaining a 23-player roster, according to PuckPedia.

Throughout his three-year career, Seider has maintained an impressive record of never missing a game and has consistently achieved at least 42 points in each season. He has led all Red Wings players in average ice time for the last three seasons.

Seider was awarded the Calder Trophy for the 2021-22 season, during which he registered 50 points.

Despite his strengths as a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-shot defenseman known for his physical play and offensive contributions, there are concerns regarding certain aspects of his game. His minus-9.4 defensive goals above replacement was the lowest among all NHL skaters for the 2023-24 season, as reported by Evolving-Hockey.

The Red Wings selected Seider sixth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.
