The New York Mets are one victory away from advancing to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 in Game 3 of the National League Division Series (NLDS). The win puts the Phillies on the brink of elimination.
Mets left-hander Sean Manaea played a pivotal role in the win, allowing just one run over seven-plus innings. He struck out six and scattered three hits while throwing 65 of his 91 pitches for strikes.
Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor spoke after the game, saying, “We have a great opportunity in our hands tomorrow, but at the end of the day, we have to come out and give it everything we’ve got,” in an interview with Fox Sports’ Tom Verducci.
Pete Alonso gave the Mets an early lead in the second inning, hitting his second home run of the series with a solo shot off Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola.
The Mets added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Starling Marte delivered a two-out, two-run single, making it 4-0. Jose Iglesias later drove in two more runs with an RBI single in the seventh, widening the lead to 6-0.
The Phillies managed to score in the eighth, but the Mets’ lead proved insurmountable. They will now turn to veteran left-hander Jose Quintana for Game 4 on Wednesday. The Phillies will counter with All-Star left-hander Ranger Suárez, as they attempt to stave off elimination.
