In a showcase of resilience and adaptability, James Harden and Ivica Zubac spearheaded the Los Angeles Clippers to a resounding 109-97 victory over Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks in the playoff series opener on Sunday.

Throughout the season, Harden meticulously honed a dynamic pick-and-roll partnership with Zubac, a strategy that paid dividends when it mattered most.

Harden, making his playoff debut for the Clippers, showcased his scoring prowess with 28 points and orchestrated the offense with eight assists. Meanwhile, Zubac delivered a playoff-career high of 20 points coupled with a dominant 15 rebounds.

“Just a perfect game for a big,” remarked Harden, who, alongside Paul George, is determined to clinch his first NBA championship.

Coach Tyronn Lue’s strategic decision to initiate the game’s first play for Zubac set the tone for the Clippers’ commanding performance.

“When I’m out there, I’m going to try to punish them in the post,” asserted Zubac, emphasizing his commitment to elevating his game for the team’s success.

The Clippers’ proficiency from beyond the arc proved decisive, outshooting the Mavericks with 18 successful 3-pointers compared to Dallas’ 10.

“We’re going to be very good anytime Zu is playing at that level,” noted George, highlighting Zubac’s pivotal role in the team’s triumph.

Despite the absence of Kawhi Leonard, sidelined due to injury since March 31, the Clippers displayed depth and cohesion, with five players scoring in double figures. Russell Westbrook contributed 13 points, while Norman Powell provided a valuable presence off the bench with 30 minutes of gameplay.

“We obviously want Kawhi back when he’s ready,” George acknowledged, underscoring the team’s confidence and experience in navigating playoff challenges.

With the victory, the Clippers extended their playoff dominance over the Mavericks, having won all three postseason matchups between the two teams in the last five years.

Doncic, leading the charge for the Mavericks with 33 points and 13 rebounds, acknowledged the Clippers’ formidable performance.

“Their mentality was next man up, and they did very well,” conceded Doncic, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus throughout the game.

Despite a spirited comeback attempt by the Mavericks in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 102-88, the Clippers maintained their composure. Harden’s clutch 3-pointer and George’s timely baskets ensured a decisive victory for Los Angeles.

“I like the way we played in the second half and we got to build on that.” Mavs coach Jason Kidd said.

Reflecting on the game, Doncic emphasized the need for sustained intensity, particularly drawing inspiration from their improved second-half performance.

The Clippers’ defensive prowess was evident in the first half, limiting the Mavericks to a mere 30 points at halftime, a playoff low for Dallas. Terance Mann and Amir Coffey, stepping into the lineup in Leonard’s absence, played pivotal roles in stifling the Mavericks’ offense.

In a playoff atmosphere charged with intensity, the Clippers’ comprehensive victory underscores their determination and adaptability in pursuit of postseason success.
