Bengals exercise fifth-year option on Jamaal Chase’s contract

In a move that comes as little surprise, the Cincinnati Bengals have opted to exercise the fifth-year option on the rookie contract of star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.

The decision, announced just ahead of the NFL draft, solidifies Chase’s position with the Bengals through the 2025 season, guaranteeing his fifth-year salary. Projections from OverTheCap.com estimate the option year to be valued at approximately $21.86 million. That is to say, Chase will make $21.86 million in 2025 if he plays under the fifth-year option.

Since being drafted fifth overall in 2021, Chase has proven to be a pivotal asset for the Bengals, forming a formidable connection with quarterback Joe Burrow, his former teammate at LSU. His stellar performance has catapulted him into the upper echelons of NFL receivers, earning him Pro Bowl honors in each of his first three seasons. Notably, Chase’s accomplishments have triggered an additional $7.5 million on his rookie option.

According to data from ESPN Stats & Information, Chase ranks among the league leaders since the onset of the 2021 season, sitting tied for third in receiving touchdowns (29) and seventh in total receiving yards (3,717). He also holds franchise records for most receiving yards in a single game (266) and single season (1,455), both achieved during his rookie campaign.

Chase is currently in the window for a contract extension and is aiming for compensation that reflects his standing near the top of a rapidly evolving market. Notably, Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown recently inked a groundbreaking deal on Wednesday, securing $77 million in guaranteed money, the highest figure for any receiver in NFL history. Despite being a fourth-round selection in 2021, St. Brown trails Chase in total receiving yards accumulated since entering the league.

Meanwhile, fellow LSU alum Justin Jefferson, a first-round pick in 2020 and standout receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, holds the title for most receiving yards among extension-eligible players still on rookie contracts. Despite his achievements, Jefferson has yet to secure a contract extension.
